Every country has its own famous dishes, but it can be easy to get stuck in your ways and not venture outside of your comfort zone when it comes to ordering food overseas. However, being adventurous and exposing your palate to new experiences could be one of the best decisions you make on foreign holidays in all parts of the world.

Think you've tried Turkish delight? Think again, as you haven't tried the real thing until you've been to Turkey, where there are many well-known establishments that make and sell the delicious confectionary in its various forms. If you're in Istanbul, pay a visit to the famous Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir emporium in the city's old quarter, where you can try authentic treats like lokum filled with clotted cream - a real pleasure for the palate.

If you're after something even more exotic, stop by South Africa, where you'll find plenty of novel culinary options to choose from. While you may not feel up to eating dishes like roasted giraffe or alligator, there are more appealing options that can make the whole trip worthwhile - such as mouth-watering butter fish which literally melts in the mouth.

If your travels see you passing through East Asia, you'll have even more excellent seafood to choose from, as well as other meat dishes such as Japanese matured wagyu beef. When it's cooked right, this aged meat is incredibly tender, and with the right seasoning it can be the cornerstone of the perfect Oriental dish.

Trying something new doesn't have to mean heading to countries where they speak a different language though, and there's plenty of great food to choose from when heading to multicultural nations like the United States. America's diverse ethnic background means many of its restaurants are billed as the best places in the world to enjoy everything from pasta and pizza to steaks, but one treat you may not have tried is a pastrami sandwich. Far from a simple sandwich, this New York favourite can be served with truffle oil and parmesan fries for the ultimate experience, and the generosity of American portion sizes means you won't leave hungry.

That's not to say you have to travel far and wide to taste the best food in the world however - not when you could save a fortune by taking cheap holidays right here in the UK and tucking in to award-winning food at Britain's finest eateries, like traditional roasted bird and game dishes at St John in London.
