With tough economic times and difficult market places, work can be quite stressful for any number of people at the moment. And if you're in charge of staff morale, you could be noticing a distinct downturn. While this lack of motivation may be understandable when you consider the fact many people are having to work harder for longer in the recent financial downturn, it is far from ideal for your company. When your staff are not performing well, neither will your business. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do that will raise staff morale and help them work to their full potential despite difficult times.

Start off by thinking about the general climate in the office. Do you think your staff are feeling worried or distrustful? This isn't unusual when there are bad times ahead, as many people can become distrustful of their jobs and are scared of being made redundant. The best way to combat this is to encourage an open door policy, speak to all of your staff realistically about the direction the business is heading and what they can expect over coming months. Don't ignore your staff's concerns, even if you have bad news, as this is a sure fire way of increasing resentment and distrust in the workplace.

Another really good way to make sure staff feel better is to let them know when their efforts are appreciated. Acknowledging hard work is always a good way to let staff know that they are valued, and you can go about this in a number of ways. You can set up an official weekly or monthly announcement that allows you to highlight people who've done a good job and share their success with the rest of the company. But you can also take the time to write people personal emails, or stop by to have a quick conversation, whereyou can let them know you value their contribution.

You can also let staff know you think highly of them by rewarding them with prizes or gifts for hard work. Corporate incentives such as vouchers or gifts can be a great way to encourage people to go the extra mile, as well as making them feel good about it when they do. Remember, keeping morale high is a priority, as happy staff are your best asset when it comes to boosting the productivity of your business and weathering stormy times.
