One of the enduring favourite themes of fancy dress, pirate costumes are popular with all age groups - from young swashbucklers to buccaneer beauties embracing the sexy side of the seven seas. Just because it's a popular choice doesn't mean you can't still make an impression in your pirate costume though, especially when taking steps to stand out from the rest of the scurvy sea dogs.

The pirate craze is in no danger of dying out, with films like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise making it big at the box office and events such as 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' on 19th September keeping the seafaring villains top of the pecking order when it comes to fancy dress. Kids love dressing up as bad guys and grown men may wish to emulate Johnny Depp to turn some heads at fancy dress parties - though may be disappointed when they turn up in exactly the same attire as all of their friends, who also took the quick route.

Customising your pirate outfit is key to standing out, and it doesn't have to be too expensive or time consuming. While you may be able to pick up accessories such as eye patches, hooks and even parrots fairly cheaply in novelty shops and elsewhere, it's worth investing in a stylish pirate coat to let other partygoers know who's captain - whether you prefer to model yourself on Jack Sparrow or a fiery Caribbean beauty. That's because the pirate craze isn't just one for the boys - plenty of women embrace the opportunity to play the role of the villainous rogue.

When putting together your fancy dress costumes, it's unlikely you'll have all the items to hand in your wardrobe - a pair of boots may pass for pirate wear, but you can easily find costumes online that include satin shirts or dresses along with jackets and all the trimmings. Throw in a moustache or wooden leg to complete the image, and you'll have your customised pirate look off to a tee - ready to cut down less imaginative land-lubbers who pulled their pirate look off the shelf.

One way to encourage originality among your fellow buccaneers could be to make your fancy dress party all about pirates - that way, your guests will know that a little creativity is needed, and best of all you'll have the freedom to spend the day talking like a pirate.
