There was a time when the words ‘hybrid car’ would have made you think of some sci-fi invention that had no place in the real world.
Now of course it is a very different matter. Many people drive hybrid cars and lots more are thinking about investing in them too. But do they really represent a cost effective way to drive?
The answer, as you might expect, is not as clean cut as you might think. For starters it could depend on the type of driving you do. Hybrids are designed to stop burning fuel when they are stationary. This means that if you are stopped in traffic and just sitting there with the engine idling, you won’t be burning any fuel. However long journeys that don’t require any stops won’t benefit from this feature. So the kind of driving you are used to could have a significant effect on how much money you save on fuel.
There are also several incentives for buying a hybrid car. These vary from place to place of course, but lots of countries are offering incentives to get people to go green, and buying a hybrid often fits very nicely into this bracket. You could benefit from lower tax and cheaper prices if you get a hybrid rather than a general car.
