The Merseyside city of Liverpool is a popular destination for tourists throughout the year, especially since its stint as European Capital of Culture for 2008. With a number of new and improved centres adding to its already-impressive haul, Liverpool is indeed one of the UK's cultural hotspots - and you can discover these offerings even when visiting in the colder months.

Heading to Liverpool in January can be a great way to avoid the crowds of hectic December shoppers, while still enjoying some of the festive atmosphere left over from the event. The Christmas markets may be closed for another year, but you could still find tickets for star-studded pantomimes and other Christmas shows taking place at venues like the Liverpool Empire and Echo Arena, as well as seeing the Christmas lights and other decorations before they're taken down and it's a return to business as usual in Liverpool.

One notable difference between December and January in Liverpool is the prices. Like anywhere else, the sales begin on Boxing Day, and will be in full swing when you arrive on your January visit, making this the best time to head over to the north-western city. Retail therapy in Liverpool's shopping centres can be an attraction in itself, and you'll be safely sheltered from the cold weather inside the large department stores.

Don't shut the world out entirely on your Liverpool break though, especially if you're keen to find out more about the city's history while you're here. Many of Liverpool's top museums are located in Albert Dock, part of which is now protected as a World Heritage Site due to its historical significance, where you'll find such diverse attractions as the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the Museum of Liverpool Life and the Beatles Story Museum. The latter will be especially significant if you're a long-time fan of the Fab Four, and includes collectables such as John Lennon's famous white piano, in addition to other rarities and interactive exhibits.

Sport fans will also have a lot to look forward to in Liverpool, including visiting the home grounds of the city's two biggest teams, at Goodison Park and Anfield respectively. Whatever you do in the daytime, be sure to give your taste buds a break from the norm during your January break too - whether your Liverpool hotels have convenient restaurants on-site, or you head out to discover the finest eateries in the city centre.
