With the summer holidays on their way, it’s hard to come up with ways to keep the kids entertained and out of your hair without resorting to defaults like computers and television programmes. But, for many parents, it’s exactly these activities that we should be discouraging our children from engaging in, so what else can you do that will keep the kids both occupied and happy?

Now that the country is on the brink of summer, parents are going to be faced with the challenge of looking after their young ones over the school holidays. It can be hard to keep kids entertained at the best of times, but when you’ve got to do so for a number of weeks at a time, it can be hard to come up with ideas that they’ll like, other than options like television or video games.

Despite the fact that many kids would be happy to sit playing video games whilst the sun is scorching outside, doing so is highly questionable with regards to their health and it’s hardly the sort of sociable activity you’d be hoping for them to engage in over the summer either. But what can you do to get them outside exercising when there are so many options for them within their own rooms? Whilst computers and television are all very well in small doses, it’s clear that there’s nothing like good old fashioned outdoor exercise when it comes to improving both your child’s health and their overall mood. The problem is getting them outside – but with a few of the best children’s toys that will encourage them to get out and about, you won’t find it too difficult to get them playing in the garden or local park.

There are so many outdoor toys to choose from that you may not know where to start, but a few of the old standards that you may remember from your own childhood are always a good thing to consider. For example, playing with skipping ropes, space hoppers, pedal cars, trampolines and pogo sticks are all great ways to get your child’s heart rate up, and for something even more energetic there’s nothing like throwing a bit of sports into the mix and allowing them to play with and against each other in games involving running around like rounders, basketball or football. You can also teach your kids some playground games if they don’t already know them, for instance, tig in its various forms will get them running about even more. You can even invite their friends over too so they can all get involved in team games.

Another good way to get the kids outside is to get a paddling pool if you have a back garden and fill it with water for them to play in. This is a fun way for kids to interact and will help keep them cool too. Just remember to keep a good supply of sun tan lotion if your children will be exposing their skin to the sun for extended periods of time.

With so many toys and games that can be played outside, it really doesn’t have to be too hard to get your children outdoors. A little pushing will help them awaken their imaginations and then they’ll be more than happy to get outside and play with childrens toys, having forgotten all about the television and their games consoles.
