Thanks to low cost flight deals, ferry routes and the Eurotunnel, travelling abroad doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming for Brits - making a number of cities and other destinations across Europe top picks for short breaks. With a recent study finding that over 60 per cent of adults have treated themselves to weekends away over the past year, it's clear that the recession hasn't dampened our enthusiasm for getting away from it all.

Travelling overseas can be the best way to leave your worries from home behind, and sometimes you don't have to travel too far to experience a very different culture and way of life. This can especially be the case in countries where English isn't the dominant language, such as France, which beat other favourites like Ireland and Spain as the number one weekend break destination for travelling Brits.

France's close proximity to and easy access from the UK doubtless contribute to its continuing popularity, but the sheer diversity of experiences available in the country also keep visitors coming back for more. Even if you've exhausted the sights of Paris and Lyon, you could consider heading off the tourist trail to lesser known places like Dinard in Brittany, which features pristine beaches and exquisite restaurants, as well as boasting an old-world charm that's been lost in more modernised resort towns.

Spain is another holiday favourite that's easily reached by cheap flights from UK airports, but if you're only planning to spend a couple of days in the country it can be worth visiting a smaller town so you don't get overwhelmed by the activities on offer. Jerez de la Frontera is a recommended spot in the Andalucia region, which features many historic buildings dating as far back as the 11th century, as well as other nostalgic delights such as horse riding and flamenco festivals that take place throughout the year.

The Netherlands is another country that's enduringly popular for weekend breaks, and if you've already visited Amsterdam you can look forward to a very different experience in Rotterdam. A far cry from the historic buildings of other Dutch cities, Rotterdam's devastation in the Second World War led to its rebuilding as one of the most modern cities in Europe, but that doesn't mean the city is lacking in culture and heritage - far from it, with some of the country's finest artworks being on display in galleries such as the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
