Cottages are a popular alternative to hotels for many reasons, whether guests prefer the independence and convenience of a home away from home or are simply looking to save money on the best value deals. Both accommodation types are well suited to their respective environments, and while hotels may be the most convenient option if you're looking to stay in the heart of a city, those choosing breaks in the countryside could find many advantages to choosing a cottage stay instead.

When you stay in a cottage, you can enjoy considerable freedom over the restrictive environment of hotels. No longer will you have to be home by a certain hour, or keep the noise down to avoid disturbing other guests - especially if your cottage is far away from civilisation, in areas such as the Lake District, Peak District or other idyllic countryside locations. If you're staying with family or close friends, you'll be free to be yourself, without having to worry about dressing appropriately before heading down for breakfast or worrying whether you're occupying areas that other guests might like to use.

Cottages also offer considerably more room than cramped hotel rooms, as you'll have free reign of the building to find room for your luggage and that of your fellow residents. You also probably won't have to worry about parking either, as you'll be able to pull up right in front of your cottage, alongside your private lawn - another clear winner for cottage guests.

If you prefer the independence of cooking your own meals while you're away, self catering cottages can be ideal - and you'll also save considerable money by not dining in restaurants every evening of your holiday. That said, you will usually find there are alternative dining options available if you feel peckish after a day's exploration and you don't feel like standing in front of a stove when you get back.

Cottages can be the only realistic option for some travellers too, such as those who wish to take their pets on holiday. It can be worthwhile for those looking to get away to search for cottages which allow dogs.  Countryside cottages are great as they put you in an ideal position to take your pet for walks in new and exciting areas. You won't have to leave your dog in kennels and miss their company on your holidays any longer, and they're sure to get a lot out of the holiday too.
