With environmental concerns becoming ever more important and holidaymakers increasingly looking for ways to save money on their trips overseas, alternative transport options such as ferries and trains can present an ideal option. There are even routes available to countries you might not usually associate with ferry travel, such as Holland.

Taking flights can be the quickest way to reach your destination, but time isn't everything - especially when you have the long weekend to enjoy on the May Day bank holiday. The time you're saving is likely to be made up for in terms of more expensive travel tickets, and you should also consider all the extra time that flights involve - such as check-in, security and the need to be at the airport several hours before your departure.

Taking the ferry is a way to avoid the queues and intrusive security checks, as well as allowing you to enjoy a more authentic travel experience as you watch the world go by. Ferry travel also has a significantly lower impact on the environment than planes, and you won't feel so cramped during the journey as you have the freedom to move about, get some fresh air and even relax in on-board restaurants and bars with your fellow travellers.

Getting across the sea is only the first part of your journey though, and once you arrive in the Netherlands you can take the similarly environmentally-sound train to a destination of your choice for a low price, if you're travelling with a rail and sail to Holland ticket. For just a little extra, your ticket could also include rail connections within the UK for your outward trip and return, so you can leave the car at home and don't have to worry about getting to the ferry port.

Holland is a great destination for bank holiday breaks, located just seven hours from the UK if you're travelling to the Hook of Holland port, and from there less than an hour to the major cities of Rotterdam and the Hague. The vibrant floating city of Amsterdam, one of Europe's cultural meccas, is also less than 90 minutes away by train.

If you are travelling to the Netherlands for the May Day break, you could consider extending your stay a little longer to join in the local festivities of Liberation Day on 5 May, when the country's streets come to life with colourful carnivals in celebration of the end of the country's occupation by the Nazis in the Second World War.
