Biarritz has been a favourite destination of the French and foreign visitors alike for centuries, since first being brought to international attention as the summer residence of Napoleon III's Spanish wife, Empress Eugenie. One of the first seaside resort towns to truly benefit from the rising interest in spa and wellness breaks, Biarritz has drawn thousands of visitors each year since the 19th century - and continues to do so, with five spa and wellbeing centres located in the region.

There's so much to love about Biarritz, from the exquisite fresh air that catches many visitors off-guard to the natural splendour of its cliffs and rock formations, most famously the Virgins Rock. However, the town's man-made sights are just as enthralling, and include quaint village cottages, the old fishing port and Art Deco villas along the coast. Architecture lovers should head inside the Chappelle Imperiale to gaze in awe at its ornate roof and wall tiles, while the fabulous blue dome of the Russian Orthodox Church can be seen from far and wide.

Heading into the sea reveals even more wonders of Biarritz, including its excellent surf. Great for swimming or water sports, it should be no surprise that Biarritz is also popular as a surfing destination, and even holds an annual surf festival that draws impressive crowds. There's plenty of excitement to be had inland too, with activities from horse riding to golf ensuring there's something for everyone on Biarritz breaks, and when the night falls you can head to its popular waterfront casinos and restaurants to wind down.

It's Biarritz's status as an elegant and relaxing resort that's most prominent in many peoples' minds though, and hoteliers have long been wise to these charms - meaning you'll never be stuck for Biarritz hotels or spas when visiting the region. You'll see plenty of signs advertising 'thalassotherapie' - treatments using natural seawater - which range from seaweed wraps to bubble baths. All of these are aimed at replenishing vital minerals and making you feel happy and refreshed.

You can ensure the minimum of stress on your Biarritz wellness holiday by visiting outside of peak seasons, when the beaches tend to be thronged with families. The weather should still be excellent in May, June and September, and these months are often the most relaxing. Combine your Biarritz break with a trip to Paris, just two hours away by car, to get even more out of your French visit.
