Many cities around the world host grand celebrations to mark the passing of December 31st, but nowhere celebrates New Year quite like New York City. From the iconic Ball Drop in Times Square, televised to millions around the world, to alternative celebrations in the city's thronging streets, bridges and public parks, New York is the best place to let your hair down when the clock sounds the first chimes of a New Year.
The New Year Ball Drop is arguably the single most recognisable tradition observed on the night anywhere in the world, apart from the ubiquitous fireworks displays that also tend to be bigger, brighter and louder in the Big Apple - fitting New York's reputation for grandeur. The ball itself is a year-round attraction in Times Square, and has been since it was first introduced more than a century ago in 1907.
Don't settle for watching the action unfold on TV, however, when you could be one of the million revellers packed into the area to watch its descent at 11:59pm, accompanied by dazzling pyrotechnics and one ton of confetti marking its landing. Times Square isn't the only place you can see in the New Year in New York either, and you'll find many events taking place simultaneously to mark the annual occasion.
