Whilst there are a number of scenic routes across Australia, arguably the most picturesque part of the country for driving through is the west coast. Here are a collection of some of the most popular ones.

Firstly, there’s the Rockingham Jarrahdale Heritage Trail. Only an hour south of Perth, the Rockingham Jarrahdale Heritage Trail is a 36 kilometre scenic drive that begins at Railway Terrace, the site of Rockingham's original jetty and retraces the route of the 1872 timber railway. On completion of the heritage trail you can continue through to Jarrahdale and on to Serpentine Dam and Falls.

Then there is the Great Forest Trees Drive. Located just south of Pemberton, four and a half hours drive south of Perth, the Great Forest Trees Drive in Shannon National Park is a 48 kilometre scenic drive trail through spectacular Karri forest. Stop at one of several beautiful picnic and information spots while enjoying the natural surrounds and appreciate the age and grandeur of the tall trees as they tower up to the sky. Consider seeing some of the forest on foot by taking one of the many walk trails in the park. One of the more popular walks will take you to the National Park’s Dam which is a spectacular sight. The national park even has its own FM radio commentary which broadcasts informative stories about the park at sign-posted stops throughout your drive!

There is also the Scotsdale Tourist Drive. This tourist route, extending 34 kilometres from the town of Denmark to McLeod Road, joins up with the South Coast Highway and then connects to Williams Bay National Park. It will take you through towering Karri trees and lush forests with a variety of wildflowers in season and bird life, and can visit many charming galleries, studios and workshops. An orchard, wineries and Alpaca stud and animal farm are attractive stops along the way, as well as many stops that offer great vantage points for ocean views.

Finally, there’s the Indian Ocean Drive. Heading north of Perth, the Indian Ocean Drive is a 4 day trip that starts in Lancelin and continues north along the coast to Geraldton. The completed route officially opened in September 2010 and includes some of the most iconic experiences on offer in Australia’s Coral Coast, from the unique Pinnacles Desert in Cervantes, sky diving and sea lion charters in Jurien Bay, to the Central Greenough Historical Settlement and the recently revitalised Geraldton foreshore.

All of the above mentioned scenic driving routes are memorable but always prepare for your road trips in advance, as a car that is in good working condition is vital. This includes the condition of your windows because you certainly want a good view of the scenery while driving! So don’t forget to organise your car glass replacement if needed before you set off, as well as any tyre replacements and other maintenance that might be needed.
