Is it really possible for the journey to be more enjoyable than the destination? Common sense would say no, but with these scenic driving routes throughout Canada, that just might be the case. Whether you’re up for some serious adventure or simply looking for a quiet afternoon, the driving roads of Canada certainly won’t disappoint.

Firstly, there’s Highway 99 is in British Columbia. The best part of Highway 99 is the Sea to Sky Highway. Carved in a steep cliff with a sprawling view of the Howe Sound gulf, getting past the Sea to Sky Highway is both an exhilarating experience and an incredible challenge. Along the drive, you’ll get past the rich greenery of the Cayoosh Creek Valley, the stunning view of the mountains along the Fraser River and the Whistler’s stunning glaciers. You’ll drive through five climactic zones—that’s more than any other driving route within Canada.

The Icefields Parkway on Highway 93 is also widely considered to be one of the world’s most stunning drives. Along the 230-km drive are moose, goats, elk and other animals you never get to see in their natural habitat. As you drive along Banff, you will pass glaciers, lakes, peaks and ice fields. Atop the peak is a full view of all waters of Banff. Past Banff is the Sulphur Mountain where you can get a dramatic view of the Icefields Parkway from the observation deck.

For 186 miles, you can take in the beautiful and pure view of the coastline of the Cape Breton whilst driving Nova Scotia’s Cabot Trail. This is a looped trail leading to astonishing plateaus and mountainsides. You will literally drive through mountains and valleys, giving you lush views of the trees and waters. The Cabot Trail is a tireless drive to the Highlands National Park, where you can go hiking or camping. You can also drop by the restaurants in the highland communities to have a local taste of your Canadian favorites.

If you want to get away from the pollution of the city, make your way through the Viking Trail in western Newfoundland. Along the drive you’ll encounter the most interesting geological natural wonders. You can even park along the trail and enjoy a multitude of activities, from biking to bird viewing. The trail leads to L’Anse aux Meadows, the location of the remaining Viking site in the entire North America. It is also a protected Unesco World Heritage Site.

All it takes to appreciate the natural wonders of Canada is a long, relaxing drive. Before setting off though, make sure that your car is in great shape. Check your tires, have any auto glass replacement or window chip repairs taken care of, make sure you leave with a full tank of fuel and ensure your engine’s in perfect condition, to avoid any issues on the drive.
