The most popular dates for weddings in the northern hemisphere are the summer months of June, July and August which also means that it is also a very popular time for honeymoons. With the trend for booking holidays turning to last minute deals what are the best places to go for a romantic summer honeymoon if you haven't booked already?

June marks the beginning of summer and is a good time to explore Europe and the USA as temperatures are starting to rise to holiday weather. It is also the start of winter in the southern hemisphere, so it is a good time to visit those countries that can be a little bit too hot in the summer. It's also an opportunity to get a good deal on holidays to places like Australia's Northern Territory and Machu Picchu in Peru as low season sets in. Steer clear of the Middle East and many parts of Asia unless you enjoy very hot climates.

June is also the perfect month to enjoy a South Africa safari in the Kruger National Park. This is an exciting place to spend your first couple of weeks together as a married couple. The days are cool and dry (around 17 Celsius) and the park is full of a wide variety of animals to spot during 4x4 safari trips. Watch huge herds of zebra having their breakfast on the savannah whilst big cats try to stalk them through the tall grass. Enjoy days and nights experiencing nature at its most awesome and have romantic evenings watching the sunset turn the panorama a stunning crimson colour.

Summer is in full swing by July as we reach the school holidays - so expect a rise in price and buy resorts. Try to steer clear of popular family hotels and destinations to escape the crowds so you can enjoy some relaxing time as newlyweds.

July is the best month to visit the spectacular San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State, USA. Maybe not the first place that comes to mind for a honeymoon, but the possibility of spotting orca whales, spending warm days and kayaking together along the tranquil blue waters of Puget Sound is enough to warm anyone's heart. It is high season so try to stick to the quieter Friday Harbour to escape the crowds. Adventurous honeymooners can hike along mountainous trails and enjoy views across the sound that seems to stretch on forever. For the gentle explorer there are plenty of small villages to explore with streets lined with galleries and quaint inns.

A perfect honeymoon in August would be a trip to the beautiful island of Sri Lanka. The rains have eased and the city of Kandy is alive with the buzz of the Esala Perahera festival. This festival is the largest Buddhist celebration in the world and draws nearly a million people each year. Enjoy your time together in the beautiful inland city of Kandy and then head to one of the beach resorts that are scattered along around 600 miles of pristine coastline. Relax in a hammock while the sun sets over the beautiful Indian Ocean - a perfect example of honeymoon packages at their best.
