If you've ever signed up to a popular online dating site, you're probably all too aware of how overwhelming it is to be suddenly presented with an enormous sea of potential dates you'd never have any way of meeting by chance. The possibility is there to go out on so many dates – but, let's face it, we're all busy! Who's got the time to go out on all of these dates without knowing at least one of them is going to end up being a sure thing?

Well, if you find that you're swamped with possibilities, the best thing to do to save your time – and your sanity – is to narrow it down. Even if there are twenty people you like the look of, there may only be three or four out of that twenty that are actually compatible with you, meaning it's a good idea to spend some time narrowing your list down and working out exactly who seems like the best candidates for your love life.

One of the best places to start, but not always the perfect one, is with looks. It's certainly easy to choose people and place them higher up the list based on their looks, but you should be careful as by doing so you might miss out on a real gem. Looks do not dictate personality, and when somebody who doesn't rate with your top three in terms of attractiveness still has a personality perfectly matched to yours, they could still be worth a look - so proceed with caution when ruling folks out based on this aspect.

There are other aesthetic ways of getting a few more potentials off their list. For example, if you're a stickler for spelling and grammar, ugly profiles written in internet speak with no respect for proper grammar probably turn you off already – so if any of your potentials have this type of writing on their profile, drop 'em. It'll save you the pain of receiving their messages in the long run.

Other things to look out for are people who don't seem to have much in common with you, and that could be in terms of anything, not just likes and dislikes. It's often easy enough to tell whether or not you think you'd get on with someone when you read their profile, so pay attention and think to yourself 'can I see myself spending time with this person?'

Hopefully you've narrowed down your list a decent amount now and that means it's time to arrange some times and enjoy single dating with people you can be sure you've got a good chance with! That is, while you're still single!
