Venice is one of Europe's most iconic cities and is known the world over as a bastion of Renaissance culture and history. What's more, its canals and grand architecture give it a unique charm, one that has attracted tourists to its streets for centuries. Today, it's estimated that the tourist population of Venice usually outnumbers its local residents, particularly in the summer months when the city heaves with visitors. If you only have a day or two to spend in Venice, here's a list of some of its top sights and attractions.

Perhaps the most famous way to see Venice is by travelling along its ubiquitous waterways - especially the immensely scenic Grand Canal. However, while this mode of transport is certainly one that must be tried at least once during your trip to the city, remember that water taxis, vaporetti (water buses) and especially gondolas can be very expensive. A much cheaper - and often just as attractive - alternative is simply to walk. And since there are no cars in Venice, the only traffic you'll encounter is in the form of pedestrians. Given the number of tourists that will also be walking around the town, it's unlikely that you will get lost but remember to carry a map with you anyway so you can always navigate towards Venice's public squares.

The main square in Venice is Piazza San Marco, where you'll find the crown jewel of its many churches: the Basilica di San Marco. This stunning cathedral is a quintessential example of the elaborate nature of Byzantine architecture and its golden domes have become an iconic image of Venice over the last several hundred years. Entry to the Basilica is free but unsurprisingly the queue can be many hours long so make sure that you're well-prepared to wait and that you're appropriately dressed (no short skirts, shorts or bare shoulders). Also in Piazza San Marco is the Campanile, a bell tower that's well worth a visit for the fantastic views of the city it offers.

Another famous attraction is the Rialto Bridge, a picturesque covered walkway that features in almost all photographs and travel guides on Venice. However the area is more than simply a good photo opportunity during your trip. In this area, you'll find many open air market stalls selling a range of items, including fresh fruit, vegetables and fish, and also some souvenirs. These stalls are often less expensive than those found in Piazza San Marco.

Due to Venice's unique location however, it's important to plan your travel to the city carefully. Driving there can be inconvenient as cars have to be parked at the entrance to the city and daily rates can be very expensive. Instead, flights to Venice may offer a hassle-free solution, as there are frequent bus links from mainland airports to the city centre. Alternatively, air travellers can also get to Venice by water taxi, which is a much pricier - but perhaps more stylish - way to enter the city.
