Christmas is a time for the family and New Year a time for celebration, but that doesn't mean those two annual milestones need to be spent at home in the freezing British Isles. The two-week winter break means travellers with children could find late December and early January the ideal time to take a winter sun holiday, swapping the cold of their home country for warmer climes abroad.



There's a common misconception that winter sun breaks need to be all about sun, sea and sand, but there's no reason you can't combine your trip abroad with some cultural exploration too - especially when heading to countries overflowing with history, such as Egypt. The Maldives may not be the ideal option for budget travellers, but those looking to soak up the sun in style will find themselves spoiled for choice with luxury hotels, some of which even occupy their own islands.

However, for the ultimate in winter escapism, there's no beating Caribbean holidays - with so many islands to choose from, each with a wealth of unique features, this part of the world has long been a major draw for Brits and Americans looking to escape the winter cold. Anguilla may not be the best known of the islands, but its flat landscape means it offers some of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean, perfect for sunbathing or heading into the warm sea. You'll also be well catered for by a multitude of gourmet restaurants, ensuring that every part of your Caribbean holiday makes it one to remember.



If you're keen to head beyond the beaches and explore the beautiful landscapes of the Caribbean islands, Dominica could be your best option, with its rainforest interior being ideal for day trips or hikes. You could even have the opportunity to meet with the Caribs, the last remaining indigenous tribe in the entire Caribbean, as well as get up close to local wildlife such as hummingbirds.
