Even the best of plans often go awry and, it seems, the more public the setting or more well known the victim, the more embarrassing the incident. From glossy magazines to blogs, the world is full of column inches dedicated to celebrity mishaps and 'caught-on-camera' accidents, proving beyond doubt that there can often be nothing funnier than having a harmless laugh at someone else's expense.
In a society seemingly driven on celebrity news and star-studded gossip, the minor details and trivial facts of many celebrities' lives turn into vast news stories, of which no shame is left uncovered. It seems that celebrities' best efforts to cover up are often just not enough, as wardrobe malfunctions are frequently grabbing headlines. One of the most famous has to be Tara Reid's inadvertent breast-flashing exhibition, as she smiled for photographers on the red carpet, completely unaware that one half of her dress had headed south for the occasion. Of course, after being helped by an assistant, the star was fuming and demanded that the photographer's delete the pictures. As if that would happen?
You would think having money to burn, a choice of any of the world's top designers at your beck and call and the knowledge that you're going to be judged as soon as you step onstage would have been enough for Janet Jackson to choose a less risqué outfit for her 2004 Super Bowl halftime entertainment slot. However, her stunt with Justin Timberlake probably did her more harm than good, and created the word 'Nipplegate'. From Mariah Carey to Rihanna, even the most famous faces in the world aren't safe from traitorous clothing. Speaking of Justin Timberlake, the former Britney-dating ladies man admitted to being so overcome with nerves at meeting his idol Michael Jordan that his bladder got the better of him, and he realised he 'had peed a little'.
However, at a recent concert in Germany, punk girl Pink fell victim to something far more dangerous than fabric and nerves. During the performance of her hit single Get The Party Started' she promptly had to stop the show after a high-wire aerial mishap hurled her into the crowd barrier and left her bruised and swearing on the ground.
In Leicester recently, crowds were left looking flushed after the town's Lord Mayor had a 'wardrobe malfunction' of his own mid-speech. Speaking at the Global Education event, to an audience largely made up of children, the town's mayor was left red-faced after his trousers dropped, just as he got on stage. After apologising profusely, a spokesman for the mayor has suggested that a recent attempt to lose weight has left the mayor in need of a new pair of mens trousers and perhaps a belt.
For embarrassing injuries though, it's hard to beat Robert Paterson's efforts when he was shooting the first day of the final Twilight movie. When lifting co-star Kristen Stewart into the air for a romantic embrace, R-Patz suffered what can only be described as a 'sprained buttock', which apparently required several hours of massage before he could walk again. Ouch.
